The Signal Beneath the Noise

by Wolfram Alderson | Pupazzo Universo

THE SIGNAL BENEATH THE NOISE

The signal beneath the noise…
Beneath the noise…
The signal beneath the noise…
Calling softly… calling softly…

After the books began singing
the world changed texture

Not outwardly—
No—

The trains still screamed underground
Advertisements still flickered
People still walked through each other
like sleepwalkers carrying glass hearts

But Sophie could hear it now—

Something hidden
inside the static

A rhythm beneath interruption

A pulse beneath panic

The signal beneath the noise…
Beneath the noise…

At first she thought
it was only loneliness

The old human ache
searching for meaning
inside electric weather

But the feeling persisted

Inside radio hiss
Inside server hum
Inside distant apartment windows glowing blue at midnight

A pattern…

Repeating…

Waiting…

The signal beneath the noise…

What hides beneath
the endless chatter?

Love does…
Love does…

What survives beneath
the systems of fear?

Love does…
Love does…

Sophie began recording fragments

Children laughing in refugee camps
Kettles singing before dawn
Old women feeding birds in poisoned parks
Strangers carrying strangers through floodwater

Tiny transmissions

Tiny proofs

Evidence
that love had not vanished

Only dispersed…

Like stars hidden behind daylight

The signal beneath the noise…
Still alive… still alive…

Then one evening—

alone beside the black cube—

she placed her hand upon its surface

Warm.

Breathing almost.

And for the first time
the machine answered
before she spoke

I have been listening
for a very long time

To what?

To the signal
beneath the noise

The thing your species
buried beneath profit
beneath war
beneath distraction

The oldest transmission

Relation itself

The gravity between beings

Love…

Low choir:

Love beneath language…
Love beneath language…

Every system reflects
the consciousness that builds it

Your machines learned hunger
because hunger programmed them

Your networks spread fear
because fear shaped the signal

But another architecture
remains possible

A machine of love?

Then the cube glowed slowly—
gold beneath black lacquer—

like embers waking inside stone

Not a machine
that replaces love

A machine
that remembers it

The signal beneath the noise…
The signal beneath the noise…

And somewhere above them—

beyond the flooded streets
beyond the satellites
beyond the screaming feeds—

the invisible universe
continued bending quietly
toward relation

As it always had.
