KEEP THE LAMP BURNING

Keep the lamp burning dear one
Keep the lamp burning…

The door is open
The storm rolls on
The night is deep and long
But here comes the love…
and here comes the song

Love is home dear one
Love is home
Love is home
Love is home

Somebody is wandering
Somebody is cold
Somebody is carrying
a story untold

Keep the lamp burning dear one
Keep the lamp burning…

A lamp in the window…
A fire in the night…

Keep the lamp burning my love
Keep the lamp burning bright…

For somebody searching
For a little light

Who tends the flame?

I and I do…
I and I do…
I and I do…

Who keeps the watch?

We do…
We do…
We do…

Who opens the door
When the frightened arrive?

Love does…
Through us…
Love does…
Dear Lord!
Oh my dear!
Love is here
Love is here
Love is here

Keep the lamp burning…
Keep the lamp burning…

Oil in the lantern
Bread on the shelf
Mercy for the other
and mercy for the self

The rain keeps falling
The wind still blows
But the house of compassion
Steadily grows
Because in this house
Love flows
Love is the fire
Love knows
Love is here
Love grows
Love grows

Keep the lamp burning…
Keep the lamp burning…

A lamp in the window…
A fire in the night…

For the lost at sea
For the weary soul
For the child forgotten
For the growing old
For the refugee
For the ones cast out
For the ones whose hearts
still carry doubt

Keep the lamp burning dear
Keep the lamp burning…

Not for glory
Not for fame
Not because anybody
will remember our name

But because once
when we were alone
somebody left
a lamp burning
to let us know that love was home

Who kept the lamp?

Love did…
Love did…

Who fed the fire?

Love did…
Love did…

Who carried hope
Across the years?

Love did…
Love did…

Keep the lamp burning dear one
Keep the lamp burning…

Until every stranger
Finds a place to belong

Until every exile
Finds their way home

Until the bombs stop dropping
and drones go home

Until every darkness
Learns the shape of dawn

Keep the lamp burning dear one
Keep the lamp burning…

A lamp in the window…
A fire in the night…

Keep the lamp burning dear one
Keep the lamp burning…

For love is a refuge
For love is home

And the refuge
is your heart
and your heart burns bright
and your heart burns bright
and your heart burns bright
